What size art belongs above a sofa?
A helpful starting range for total artwork width
As a visual starting point, artwork often feels balanced when its total width spans about 67% to 75% of the sofa’s width. This is a flexible guideline rather than a strict rule.

“Total artwork width” can describe one piece or the combined width of a diptych, triptych, or grouping. For a grouping, include the spaces between the individual pieces when estimating the total width.
Translate the guideline to your sofa
| 72-inch sofa | Approximately 48–54 inches of total artwork width |
|---|---|
| 84-inch sofa | Approximately 56–63 inches of total artwork width |
| 96-inch sofa | Approximately 64–72 inches of total artwork width |
These measurements are starting points. Artwork orientation, ceiling height, nearby furniture, available wall space, and the amount of breathing room you enjoy can all influence what feels most balanced.
